At Glen Abbey Physiotherapy in Oakville, we have many calls from patients asking is their physiotherapy treatment covered by OHIP? (Ontario Health Insurance Plan). In most cases the answer is NO, your physiotherapy treatments will need to be billed through a third party insurer or paid out of pocket.
Who is eligible for physiotherapy treatments covered by OHIP?
There is a short list of qualifications below that can help you determine whether or not you meet OHIP’s criteria.
- 1. Do you have a valid OHIP card?
- Do you meet any of the following criteria: Under the age of 19, discharged from a hospital after an overnight stay which requires physiotherapy, receive income from Ontario Works or Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), over the age of 65? If this does not apply to you, please scroll to the bottom of this page.
- Do you have a referral from a medical doctor?
- Find a clinic that offers government funded physiotherapy services. Typical wait times in Oakville for OHIP funded physiotherapy is four weeks. For surgery related physio needs the government tries to expedite the wait times, however, if you have private coverage or no coverage (pay out of pocket) Glen Abby Physiotherapy in Oakville can see you today.

Funding for OHIP covered physiotherapy is based on an Episode of Care model. This refers to clinically-related health services to treat one patient with conditions identified by a diagnosis of an injury or health-related issues. Acute (ex. sprains or strains) and chronic (arthritis or multiple sclerosis) injuries are both eligible.
There is no specific minimum number of treatments available. The amount of treatment is dependent on what the patient requires to treat the episode. More than one episode will be eligible for treatment per year.
